Sewing is a Family Affair
My friend Katie and I met when we
both worked at a local quilt shop. Since then, she has gotten married, had
three children, and moved out of state. Currently she is a stay-at-home mom
looking to become a substitute teacher while her kids are at school. Although,
if a job in the biology field were to come her way, she would be happy to do
that too.
She does things her own way
While Katie does not quilt as often as she used to, she is working on passing down what she knows to her children. Her daughter is the main person she has shared her knowledge with so far. The only problem is, this seven-year-old girl has no interest in following the quilting rules. She much prefers cutting pieces of fabric and using them as scarves for her dolls. When she does sew, instead of placing the quilting pieces right sides together, she places the fabric as she wants and sews down the middle of the pieces. In time this young girl may come to follow the quilting rules. Or she may not. Either way, I would not be surprised if my friend has a future fashion designer on her hands.
The boys sew too . . . or at least they will
Katie also has two sons. One
older and one younger than her daughter. The younger son has shown interest in
sewing, but Katie is waiting until he’s a little older. Her older son has not
shown much interest, but he will learn someday. Sewing is one of those life
skills Katie wants all of her children to learn. One never knows when it might
come in handy.
Recently Katie’s husband proved this when he repaired the dog bed. He did not use duct tape or throw the dog bed out as some would do. Instead, he sat down and sewed it back together. Katie says the dog bed is stronger than it was before. That is the power of sewing.
