Birthday Surprise

One year I decided I was going to make my mother a quilt for her birthday.  I wanted it to be special.  The design would be original.  One I created with my mother in mind.  The fabrics would represent her too.  Everything I saw that reminded me of her was put into the quilt.  I even included Brussels sprouts.

As excited as I was about making this quilt, I knew it would be tricky making sure my mother did not find out.  This was especially hard since I wanted to be sure she liked the pattern.  If she did not, I would have to come up with something else.  I knew there had to be a way to show her the pattern without letting her know what it was for.

Fortunately it did not take me long to find a way around my dilemma.  We had decided we would make quilts for my brother’s cats.  I saw this as the perfect opportunity to show my mother the pattern by making a smaller version into a cat quilt.  Then I could get her thoughts without her suspecting anything.

She liked the pattern, but thought that one little tweak would make it more interesting. When I made her birthday quilt I did as she suggested and it became Birthday Surprise. My mother was thrilled when she finally saw the quilt. She uses it all the time. As for the original sample, it is being well enjoyed by its feline owner.
