Don't Forget the Mortar

Bricks are strong.  Even the Big Bad Wolf couldn’t blow them down.  They also have a lot of character, especially once they have aged.  Part of what gives bricks their strength and character is the mortar that binds them together.  Without the mortar a brick structure would not have the stability it needs to stay standing.  If they don’t stay standing, they don’t get the opportunity to age, and there goes the character.  Mortar, just like thread in a quilt, is necessary in order to keep everything together for years to come.  That is why it cannot be forgotten.
Made with fat quarters, this pattern came about after I decided I wanted to make a quilt that looked like a brick wall. I’m not sure where my brick wall fascination suddenly came from (I may have been watching far too many home remodeling shows) but I became determined to figure out how to make one out of fabric. It was important to me to resemble a brick wall as much as possible. I wanted the “bricks” to be staggered and cut off just as they would be in real life. The sashing is the mortar which holds together the blocks instead of the bricks. With a border that could easily be seen as cinder blocks, I feel I have truly brought the art of masonry into quilt form.
