Snow Retreat

When you live in the upper Midwest, snow storms are inevitable. At least once a year—if not more than once—snow will fall and fall and fall. It can last for days, as it did for my friend Katie when she was on a quilt retreat.

The quilt retreat was at her great-aunt’s house. Katie, her mom, and her friend arrived to enjoy a weekend of quilting. Along with them came three days of snow. It started Friday and didn’t end until Sunday. Three feet of snow fell in total. The interstate was shut down. No one could even leave the house. This ended up being a good thing for those on a quilt retreat.

Inside the house, all four women worked on their sewing. Together they created a tote bag, and then they worked on individual projects. Katie got less done than others as her experience working in a quilt shop made her the go-to person for questions. Not that Katie minded. The point of the weekend was to spend time together doing what everyone enjoyed.

Stuck inside because of the snow, everyone was able to enjoy the time even more as they were free from thoughts of what else they should be doing outside of the house. The snow allowed them to push all those worries to the side and have a good time.

Sadly, Katie’s great-aunt is no longer with her. This weekend with her great-aunt is a wonderful memory she will always have. A memory that could have turned out quite differently if there had not been three feet of snow.
